Why "NO" Is A Key To Success?

We usually understand success as a number of diverse opportunities we see and accept. So you may think – if I will say "YES", I will definitely help my business to develop and grow, I will be closer to my success.

But every business expert will say you: this is a big mistake which may ruin your business and make your success a dream which never comes true. All the negotiators know it well. "NO" is a much more important word than "YES". If you can say "NO" in time, you will highly increase your chances to get all the results you want, plan and expect. How does this paradox work?

Let's think about opportunities. First you get only several of them. One opportunity at one moment. Two opportunities in a week or a month. Of course, you agree, even if you feel a little bit of fear or anxiety. You have to accept it and you really do your best to get this chance to help you grow. The more opportunities you accept, the more "YES" you say, the more you will receive, see, hear and asked to take.

Stop at this moment.

Imagine that you are a single entrepreneur and, for example, you make paper postcards. Beautiful, stylish, high-quality and handmade ones. First months you may have a few orders a week. Every postcard you've made is a very high-quality, individual, well-made product. You get more and more orders then. But you only have the same 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Imagine that you accept all these orders. First you may be very excited about this, think about money and success you'll get soon. But what then? You have no time, so you start to make mistakes, to get over deadlines, the quality becomes to lower. You don't have any variations what to do – or to make it bad and late (what kind of success you will get this way), or to delegate your work to another people (not a fact they will do it good). Or to say "NO" to some of these orders.

This works with any types of business.

If you can't say "NO", you will lose your time, quality, respect and money. So you have to see and underline your priorities and say "NO" to other ones. When we are talking about the priorities, there are no common rules. Only you know a specification of your business, your customers and partners. Only you can understand what and who are more important than others. Someone makes accent to the most expensive orders, someone pays attention to the most loyal customers – it's your choice. The main rule and key to success is to start saying "NO"!

Why it is so difficult?

You are not sure that losing of this product, customer or order will make your business weak. Of course, you can't know it for a hundred percents, but you know your niche and you can predict the next day with a high possibility enough. We all risk every day, but if you won't try, you won't achieve your main goals. Also you may think that a person who hears "NO" from you, will lose a respect to you and your business. This may sound strange, but sometimes you get a completely opposite reaction! They already finish to push on you with all and any types of work. They start to respect you. If not – think about the other thing. What if those people just used you, your work, your time and reliability? If your reject make them furious, maybe this is their problem, not yours. With others you can always talk and settle all issues.

How to say "NO" correctly?

Listen carefully. Don't interrupt your interlocutor.

Think carefully before you answer.

Tell your reason in several clear words.

Be honest and don't excuse too much.

Be polite and respectful.

Don't say "I don't know" in this case.

Try to prepare in advance for such kind of discussions. Calm down, work with your stress, anxiety and other negative feelings about the situation. After you've made a decision, trust yourself and don't doubt a lot. That's why it is so important to take your time to think about this better.

Don't forget to say "NO". Remember that you may feel uncomfortable for several minutes but you will take only that opportunities which are useful and good for you.

Good luck!
