Your New Team: Join and Lead!

You are going to lead a new team. This is an existing group of people who already work in the company. You are new in this company and new in this group of employees.

They don't know you – and when people don't know who and what to expect, they don't like you at this moments. Will they become your best fans? It depends on many different factors including your own attitude, professionalism and leadership skills, your own example and experience.

To be a good new leader you should start your work in a right way. How to do it? Let's discuss.

Plan, but wait for a while

When you are going to start your new leadership, you may have a plan. It is good, but it doesn't work properly all the time. You, definitely, know a lot about the company you are being hired in, so you know what was good and what was not so good. You may have a plan of relevant and strict steps which you are going to represent to the "old new" team and make people follow your brilliant ideas. Stop at this moment and wait. Many well-known leaders recommend new bosses to have a plan, but not to start improving it with the first days. First you need to look around, to see what people do, what people think, how they work and what they are interested in.

Choose your style

Your managing steps depend on many diverse conditions. You may be a crisis manager, or a seasoned manager, or a top new leader of a big company. You may lead a small group of creative designers or a huge corporation of technical experts. Your team and main company line of work define your managing style. Think about the goals of your company, ask about the ways of work which had been used there before you became a boss. Is it normal to provide enthusiastic and quite distant managing style or to be a little closer, almost like a friend to your employees? Is it normal to call working meetings several times a week or you'd better communicate in conference style using different business software? Or just emails, or chats – in some small companies this way is appropriate. In any case, don't be too authoritarian and too liberal – these are extreme ways which never work good.

Create a communication line

Sometimes, especially in small companies, it is used to talk to every employee, to know everyone by name and be quite close to your team. If you are going to lead this type of team, you may use personal lines of communication. In big companies, corporations etc. it is impossible and unreasonable to talk to everyone. This way you should use a communication line which will settle your managing goals – conferences, meetings with top-managers, corporate events and other big formats of communication. In your talks you should be clear and transparent – talk about goals and mission you are going to provide at the company level, give ideas and specific tasks, ask for the feedback, analyze the results of your common work.

Ask, see and listen

Turn to some kind of a sponge – see and listen to everything all the time, to get as much information as it is possible. Combine your puzzle to see the whole picture of what is happening in your company and team. Learn who are unofficial leaders, who are friends and who doesn't like each other – all this information will help you to build a really good teambuilding strategy. Experts say that a half or all the words you say must contain questions. Ask, ask and ask, and listen carefully to what you hear. Don't make big changes before you understand all the most important moments and see the whole situation. Make sure that your new team also sees you, listens to you and hears what you say.

Don't be afraid of having no likes

They don't have to like you from the first time they see you. Most of us are unfriendly to new team leaders even if we didn't like the previous ones. You should earn their attention and their respect – so it is better to make a plan about this in advance. You should be correct and attentive to them, respect every of them and make your attitude as clear as you can. You should look like an opened person with the same goals – you are here to make this business successful. Forget about your ego and ambitions for a while – it is needed to be earned, it's not a gift. Even if you were a star in your last place of work, now you are a new person and they don't know you personally. Work with them. Be their example. Behave patiently and respectfully. You won't wait for a long time to become their best leader!
